A big snow fall of several inches can paralyze a city. That is why it is quite common to see an army of snowplows working during a heavy snowfall to try to keep at least the main arteries open. When you are working on a large area such as a parking lot, you will require less power if you overlap your passes each time. It may seem a bit tedious to go over much of the same area you just passed and only clear a few feet of new snow but it will actually require less power from your truck engine.

Never stop a snow clearing job part of the way through. Quite often, the temperature of the air will rise during a snow fall and drop down a few hours later. Any snow that has not been cleared away or that has been left in rows may become very hard as the temperature falls. Once it has become more compacted and frozen, it will be more difficult to remove.

If you are plowing fresh snow that is very deep, it is easier to remove only the surface layers first, leaving several inches of snow on the ground. After the top layer of snow is removed, come back and clear off the bottom layer. This will require far less power from your vehicle since you are not removing a heavy layer of snow at one time.

Always keep safety in mind. If you are plowing on a highway in whiteout conditions, there is a very high likelihood that you could be involved in an accident. Wait until visibility improves before you start plowing the snow.
